Quimsacharani: Three Headed Whip | Joaquin Gavilano

Fragments— shattered mirror

or the glass cup that you hurled?

Our sour blood made one atop this

hardwood floor. I cannot escape

the accusations from family— we brothers

are not the same.

Remember when you kicked me? I flew

out of the bed. My landing broke a chair.

For a few seconds, my lungs wouldn’t

expand—

Your face unchanged at the sight

of the quimsacharani watching us

from the kitchen’s door. I’m still

not sure if you were afraid.

Joaquin Gavilano is an international student at the University of Arkansas, currently finishing an English Literature degree. Currently, he’s applying to grad schools across the US, hoping to stay longer as an immigrant to this country. Although born and raised in Bolivia, a Spanish speaking country, he has always had a deep love for the English language. Two Poems of his were published at 'The Magazine' for their 2020 Winter selection of poems earlier this year.
